When Giant Moths invaded Singapore

If you're old like me, you were probably strolling in Singapore one day in 2014 and every corner you looked, you would see a big dark figure that had two black triangular wings protruding from its body, being made visible by the single white line dashing across the middle of those wings.

When I was a kid, I was absolutely petrified of these things. Whether or not I was in school, going out with my parents or just being at home, these giant moths would just be resting on a wall or the ceiling, sometimes in packs. Even looking at the images make my heart skip a beat.

Measuring at about 16cm, that is gigantic for an 8 year-old so naturally, I was petrified to even look any dark areas as these mostly harmless creatures were nocturnal so they would likely be in a dark area.

But why? Why did these moths just start swarming South-east Asia all of a sudden during 2014?

No one really knows. Many theories have emerged, such as there being a larger amount of predators in this area or the urban lights of the lion city just seemed to lure them even more. Whatever it is, it caused massive inconvenience.

To be a cleaner during this period was painstaking. At some areas, they would gather in clusters and just lay on the walls or floors, making the cleaners have to try and dispose them anywhere if possible.

Thankfully, one day they all just decided to flee off and leave us alone. Why did that suddenly happen? No one knows for sure, but all we know now is that it can still happen again.

Whether we like it or not.
